I think fairy tales help us access identity in social context, which can so often feel pinching and contradictory to anyone who doesn’t fit a perfect mold. And nobody fits a perfect mold! The genre helps us see which rules are arbitrary and cruel. Anyone who thinks of good and evil as binary is headed for trouble; anyone who’s aloof with the terms is headed for trouble, too. Fairy tales become a way to reckon with a world that would like to define and corral us: when the clothes don’t fit, take them off.
